Starting July 1st, the government will expand its successful rebate program for Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEVs). The government will invest an additional $5.2 million in the scheme to keep up with the growing demand as more Western Australians switch to electric vehicles (EVs). Since its launch, over $20 million has been paid out in rebates, with more than 5,900 ZEV applications approved so far.

The ZEV rebate, part of the Clean Energy Car Fund, has seen a significant increase in EV sales in Western Australia since its introduction in 2022. Up to March 31st, 2024, over 6,500 rebate applications have been received, and over $100 000 people have requested further information.

The rebate offers $3,500 to eligible individuals who purchase qualifying vehicles and apply through the Department of Transport. Applications are open until May 10th, 2025. To qualify, the vehicle must be zero-emission, powered solely by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells, weigh 4.5 tonnes or less, have a maximum value of $70,000, and be new and unregistered.

The ZEV Rebate Scheme aims to incentivise the purchase of zero-emission vehicles as part of the government's efforts to promote clean energy. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasized the role of the rebate in driving EV adoption, making them more affordable and supporting the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Minister Assisting the Transport Minister David Michael highlighted the overwhelming response to the rebate program, with over 6,500 applications received and strong interest from the public. The additional investment of $5.2 million demonstrates the government's commitment to supporting the transition to zero-emission transportation in Western Australia.
